Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for NYC in Maiden Address
During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Blueprint
