The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.
