Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
