US Military Executes Lethal Strike in Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities

According to a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.

“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Actions

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military buildup.

Only on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
