People have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future management of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the dusk arrives, the fear comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the southern area, medics said.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
