The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
