That Gruesome Animated Movie Ending That Lingers Fans
Out of all the mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has remained with me quite like the fear-filled ending of the explicitly bloody and highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, melancholy and frequently brutal universe that included several minor , desolate glimmers of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a desire to advance animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was rather an attempt to communicate a universal, cross-cultural theme about “the mutual source of each battle.”
That message is expressed via a group of colorful pastel bears , obviously modeled after a popular series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a community built around warmongering and the military-industrial complex, many of the bears are consumed by slaughtering unicorns, because of a sacred text which states them they previously were kings of the forest, before these creatures drove them out.
Some haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, and would rather experiment with narcotics and engage sexually outdoors.
Unlike their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters display genitals and definite urges.
For a particular especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a road to power — and particularly to authority above his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor , an apparent antisocial figure , and when horror takes over his group and takes his fellow soldiers individually, he takes progressively control for himself, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own terror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“Initially, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker said. “However it turns into a more intense and melancholic movie. And in the finale, it’s a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the more whimsical films by a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting animated figures swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Afterward it turns into something more like a darker work from the same artist, including ever more explicit brutality and a tangible connection to the actual horror of conflict.
Ultimately, it becomes a full-on Grand Guignol massacre.
The fear that turns the film a Halloween-friendly viewing starts well before than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for lovers of graphic films who wish to see something they’ve never viewed until now, and who can handle a story that pulls unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dark room without any distractions, and the finale will burrow deep within you and stay with you.
