An informant has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure confidential equipment permitting the Taliban to identify local individuals who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's management of a massive disclosure of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to come to the UK to flee the regime.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A spreadsheet containing private information, including names, addresses and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had sought to relocate to the UK appeared on social media.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers do not have comparable resources that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have mobile details, they can locate your exact position. That is what specialized teams achieved.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban owned necessary encryption, the whistleblower declared: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Initial findings presented to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been killed.

A gag order concerning the leak was put in force in last year and prevented any information concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the non-governmental organization associated with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they relocate when possible and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces acquired these details, would result in their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

Person A argued that internal investigation performed by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to past work history.”

The source explained horrific abuse suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to force the family to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
