New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
