Her Royal Highness's Traditional Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
