Arsenal's Disputed Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude Next Year

Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in the coming June.

Origins and Examination

This deal, said to be worth around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 militia in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal was accused of issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by declining to meet with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda operates as a branch of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “collectively determined” to part ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” read an Gunners' release.

The release further noted that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while delivering grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Gunners for Peace staging protests outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a banner that read “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and handed out sleeves to conceal the partnership emblem on uniforms.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

At the same time, the Madrid-based team signed a fresh deal for the same period that has caused the logo being carried on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
