Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
